History

WJLZ was originally known as WODC. It held the WODC call sign from December 14, 1987, until becoming WJLZ on April 29, 2003. "ODC" stood for Open Door Chapel. The transmitter used to be located and rented space at the Open Door Chapel on Virginia Beach Blvd in Virginia Beach, VA. Once the station separated from the church they changed call signs and made the format considerably more upbeat. When the station was WODC it was more southern gospel and hymns, now as Positive Hit Radio The Current it features a more diverse mix of music to appeal to all listeners. The format is presently Christian rock & Hip Hop, and they no longer play the AC format but are listed as a CHR format.

(MPR) launched a progressive music station called "The Current." In March 2004 WJLZ bought its domain name currentfm.com and changed to "Positive Hit Radio, The Current". MPR had a trademark application pending with the federal government, one which had since been rejected, which led to the filing of a federal lawsuit against WJLZ. MPR is seeking an injunction against WJLZ to keep them from using "The Current" name, ownership of the radio stations currentfm.com domain name, and unspecified monetary damages.

As of July 2008, a co-existence agreement was made and WJLZ remained "Positive Hit Radio, The Current" and on www.currentfm.com.
