History

The station began in the late 1960s as WTGM. Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association bought the then-financially troubled station in 1974 and changed the calls to WHRO-FM in 1978. In 1990, the WHRO-FM

 callsign was moved to 90.3 FM with a new classical music format. NPR news, jazz and alternative music stayed on 89.5 FM under the newly created WHRV callsign. Starting in 2009, multiple new full-power FM affiliate stations were signed-on to form a network of NPR affiliates serving Eastern Virginia.
