History

Virginia International University (VIU) was conceptually developed by long-time educator and mathematician Isa Sarac, Ph.D. [link to BIO?]. After research and consideration of several cities in the United States, Sarac finally chose to establish the university in Fairfax because of the city’s diverse population and proximity to Washington, DC. To this day, Sarac serves as the university’s president.

VIU was founded in August 1998 and by December was authorized by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) to launch its Master of Business Administration program. In August 1999, SCHEV granted the university the authority to offer additional diploma and certificate programs, followed by the Master of Science in Information Systems in April 2003.

Other highlights in the university’s history include its first commencement ceremony on May 4, 2006, and a commendation letter from the Virginia General Assembly House Joint Resolution Committee presented for the school’s 10th anniversary in April 2008.
