. Virginia's mother left when she was very young, and she was raised with the false knowledge that her mother had passed away after hitting her head on a lawn ornament.

When Virginia was fourteen, she began dating Burt Chance, who was seventeen. A year later in a parked car outside her friend's Sweet Sixteen party, Virginia conceived her son, Jimmy, making her a mother at the age of fifteen.

Virginia had to work a lot to let her son have a childhood and often left him home sitting, staring a picture or spending time with his Great Maw Maw (Virginia's grandmother, Jimmy's great-grandmother) which he did not like. When Virginia was thirty nine years old she became a grandmother, as Jimmy's daughter, Hope, was born. Virginia gave up smoking when Hope moved in with them and gave the money to Jimmy to pay for Hope's daycare.

Virginia also hates her cousin Delilah, since Delilah always had better clothes and would belittle Virginia because of this. Virginia stole Burt from Delilah to get back at her for her rude attitude.

She also had to wear a back brace in her teen years due to scoliosis.
