 in India. Kone belonged to a Konar family and was born and brought up in Kattalankulam, a village in erstwhile Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.

Government commemoration

In the State Legislature on 29 April 1994 the government announced to celebrate annually by the Govt, in Tirunelveli the memory of Veeeran Alagumuthu Kone . It was done for the year 1995. Then the government named a Transport Corporation with headquarters at Pudukottai and Government buses were operated with the name “Veeeran Alagumuthu Transport Corporation” on 3 May 1996. On the same day a large bronze statue of Veeran Alagumuthu erected by the government near Madras Egmore Railway station. The statue was opened by Chief Minister Selvi J. Jayalalithaa under the presidentship of Thiru S. Kannappan  Minster for PWD, Highways and Electricity, who had spearheaded the demand for commemoration.

The function was attended by more than 7 lakh

In that meeting Jayalalithaa announced that the fort built by Veeran Alagamuthu Kone in Kattalankulam in Tuticorin district will be renovated and made a tourist spot. However, following the general election AIADMK was voted out of power, and the DMK government assumed control in June 1996. The new government decided on 22 June 1998 to bifurcate Madurai district
