. During the war, Varivode and the surrounding area were incorporated into Republika Srpska Krajina.

In August 1995, men in Croatian military uniforms and armed civilians allegedly killed 12 elderly Serb civilians, some of them disabled, who had stayed in their homes on the eve of the liberation of self-proclaimed Krajina, and burned the village to the ground. http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/Bosnia/updates/oct95/10-04/croatia_atrocities/index.html Few Serbs have returned to the village; according to the 2001 census, Varivode currently has only 93 inhabitants.
