VARIE was established in 1999 and is a member of the International Association of Research Institutes in the History of Art.

Activities

VARIE encourages and manages collaborative and interdisciplinary projects into visual culture. It organises events, such as seminars and conferences, publishes conference papers and provides advice on funding applications.

In February 2009, it launched an e-journal entitled Art in Translation, which publishes English translations of articles on all aspects of visual culture. The journal is published by Berg Publishers and will appear three times a year.
