VARIE was established in 1999 and is a member of the International Association of Research Institutes in the History of Art.
In February 2009, it launched an e-journal entitled Art in Translation, which publishes English translations of articles on all aspects of visual culture. The journal is published by Berg Publishers and will appear three times a year.

Activities
VARIE encourages and manages collaborative and interdisciplinary projects into visual culture.
