History

Founded in 1986, its goal was to create a place where students could learn in a nontraditional sense. The classes, for example, are mostly all based on discussion. Students tend to sit in a circle and talk about articles and documents to reach their conclusions on them. Contrary to popular belief upon first hearing the name of the school, the Urban Academy is not a private school. However, one does have to go through an admissions process that is particular to the school. The school is extremely diverse, with students from almost every single socioeconomic background calling it their home. The school's current Principal is Herb Mack. Ann Cook, his wife, serves as the Vice-Principal.
