Originally started as a personal project of the Italian programmer Alberto Tozzi, Uranium gained traction thanks to the adoption by several small and medium Italian businesses. Now the software is distributed in over 70 countries and translated in 12 languages.

Among its main features Uranium includes tape backup, drive image backup (disaster recovery with bare metal restore), SQL Server database backup, virtual machines backup (Hyper-V and ESXi/vSphere), online backup through FTP/SFTP/FTPS (SSL) protocols and DVD/Blu-Ray burning. Moreover, it allows to perform synchronization tasks with any mass storage device, including network PCs, external hard drives, NAS, RDX, REV devices.

Editions

There are 7 editions of Uranium Backup currently available. One is freeware while the others are commercial.

Uranium Backup Freeware

File-by-file direct copy and/or zip compression on local/network hard drives, NAS servers, REV/RDX drives, external USB/Firewire/SATA hard drives, network computers, ISO files creation.

Limitations compared to the Base version:
  • no disk imaging backup (disaster recovery)
  • no FTP backup
  • no synchronization
  • can't be run as a Service
  • can't create zip files bigger than 4 GB (Zip64)
  • no technical support

Uranium Backup Base

Compared to the Freeware version it allows to make drive image backup (disaster recovery and bare metal restore), FTP backup (upload and download) and e-mail backup, it can create zip files bigger than 4 GB, it can be run as Service, it can delete old files (synchronization) and has the auto-update feature. Furthermore it allows to burn files on CD/DVD/HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs and backup to any type of optical media: CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, BD-R/RE, HD-DVD-R/RW and DVD-RAM media are supported, including modern high-capacity double layer DVD+R, dual layer DVD-R, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. It can also burn multisession discs and ISO files.

Uranium Backup Pro Tape

It has all the features of the Base version plus the Tape Backup functions. It supports any tape drive (SCSI, SATA, IDE, USB, SAS) and the most used types of tape cartridges: DAT

Uranium Backup Pro SQL

It has all the features of the Base version plus the possibility to perform backups and restores of MS SQL Server databases (versions 7.0, 2000, 2005, 2008, Express Edition). It allows to configure and schedule an unlimited number of backups and restores of local or remote servers, without any service interruption and with integrated data compression and encryption.

Uranium Backup Pro Shadow

It has all the features of the Base version plus the capability to copy locked/open files using Volume Shadow Copy. It also allows to make "hot backups" of running virtual machines (Hyper-V backup, VMware backup).

Uranium Backup Pro Virtual

It has all the features of the Base version plus the capability to copy any locked/open file and back up VMware ESX(i)/vSphere virtual machines. It allows to perform hot backups of running virtual machines on Windows hosts (Hyper-V backup, VMware backup).

Uranium Backup Gold

Full version: it includes all the features of the other versions, plus the capability to copy open/locked files using Volume Shadow Copy. It also allows to make "hot backups" of running virtual machines.

  • 20 MB free disk space

Supported operating systems
