Though the station has been modified from its original 1955 form to be partly ADA accessible, plans currently exist for a complete reconstruction of the station to bring it into full compliance. On February 3, 2009, RTA adopted a proposal which will completely reconstruct the rail station in the same general location, move the bus loop transfer zone to the north side of the station, and eliminate the south bus slip transfer area. Reconstruction was intended to start in 2010 with a tentative completion date of December 2012.

The station opened along with the rest of the CTS Rapid Transit on March 15, 1955
and was originally named "Cedar–University" or "University–Cedar" station, highlighting its connection with the bus lines that ran down Cedar Avenue from Cleveland Heights.
