The Federal University of Latin American Integration (UNILA) is a unique project in the history of higher education in Latin America. Its vocation is to contribute to Latin American integration, with emphasis on Mercosur, through the humanistic knowledge, and scientific and technological cooperation among universities, government agencies and international.

It is a national public university connected to the network of federal universities in Brazil. However, although it is located within a country, its goal is knowledge sharing and cooperation among the countries of Latin America. The choice of the city of Foz do Iguaçu as UNILA installation location is within the context of the Tri-National Region between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.

UNILA has the distinction of being a bilingual university, where the Portuguese and Spanish are part of everyday life. The goal is to make bilingualism a key tool for integrating cultural and intellectual in the academic community.

The University was conceived as an institution that can, within its mission, reflect on issues both regional and universal, to contribute to solving the challenges of Latin American societies. To do so, offers courses and conducts research in areas of mutual interest of Latin American countries, with emphasis on natural resources, social studies and language, international relations and areas considered strategic for the development and regional integration.

The project seeks to develop a model university for the 21st century, when the knowledge society and the formation of regional blocs have become increasingly decisive factors for the integration of nations in the global competitive landscape. This challenge involves breaking with the traditional parameters and absorb in a critical way, the positive experience of other Latin American universities, an interdisciplinary and multicultural.

The University intends to reach all of Latin America, signing agreements on academic cooperation and exchanges across the continent. Half of the 10,000 students and 500 teachers, set as a goal, will be selected from several Latin American countries and the other half of Brazil.
