Early Life In Israel

Tzvi Gal-Chen's parents moved to Palestine when they were in their teens as part of a youth movement that came to Palestine in the early 1920’s - having emigrated from Minsk in the current Belarus.
Tzvi Gal-Chen was born in Palestine on September 1, 1941.
Tzvi grew up as an Israeli Sabra on a collective farm. He served in the Israeli Army. He earned a B.Sc. in 1967 and an M.Sc. in 1970, both from Tel Aviv University, with specialization in applied math and physics.

Life in the United States

Tzvi came to the United States in 1970. In 1973, he earned a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences from Columbia University,
under the supervision of Dr. R C.J. Somerville. From September 1975 to September 1979 he was a research assistant professor at the University of Toronto. For the last 12 years of his career, he was a professor in the School of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma. He died suddenly, while on a walk, on October 10, 1994. Tzvi Gal-Chen is most noted for his work in retrieval of wind and thermodynamic variables from a single Doppler radar.
