Health Information Technology

Trinity Health is transforming patient care in community quality and reducing costs by putting the power of the latest computerized clinical tools in the hands of physicians and nurses. These state-of-the-art tools automate processes that are still often done with paper and pen at the majority of U.S. hospitals. Trinity Health hospitals use several cutting-edge applications:

• Electronic health records replace much of the paper that passes between departments and between those providing care to the patient. The latest patient history and medications are at the caregivers' fingertips wherever there is computer access. If a patient has a need to return to a Trinity Health hospital, medical staff can immediately and securely access their vital information and medical history.
  • Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) means tests and treatments are entered directly into a secure system where they can be quickly accessed by the patient's care team. Orders are clearly marked and automatically checked against a massive medical database to ensure accuracy.

  • Charting care at the bedside with mobile computers and hand-held devices, making it immediately available online to physicians and other authorized caregivers with secure access. This feature gives nurses more time with the patient.

  • Drug alert systems provide automatic "checks" to ensure appropriate medication and dosing, thereby limiting the liklihood of human error. The system checks prescribed medication against lab results and other key information within a patient's electronic health record, such as allergies.

According to the National Quality Forum, most health systems are either just beginning to switch over to these automated systems - or have not yet started. Trinity Health's goal is to make these tools available to physicians and nurses at all Trinity Health facilities. As of January 2009, 22 community hospitals within Trinity Health's integrated health delivery network have computerized clinical and revenue management applications. Industry studies have shown that hospitals using computerized systems greatly improve the quality and safety of care, as well as improve patient registration, streamline the billing process and boost financial performance.

Health Reform: "Find a Way"

Trinity Health is a strong and compelling voice in the national discussion to transform health care. Americans should no longer tolerate a system that leaves nearly 46 million people without insurance and adequate access to health care. Through its "Find a Way" campaign, Trinity Health and its partner organizations contend that health reform is a key ingredient of economic recovery, and that all lawmakers should work urgently toward a goal of "coverage and access for all Americans in a cost-effective system of care."

Trinity Health is demonstrating continued leadership in the health reform discussion through town hall events, visits to Capitol Hill and meetings with local legislators. Trinity Health president and CEO Joseph R. Swedish issued a call to action for comprehensive health reform in a column titled "Our Carpe Diem Moment: Execs, Clinicians Must Help Policymakers Find the Way to Universal Coverage". The column appeared in Modern Healthcare

History

Created by the consolidation of Holy Cross Health System and Mercy Health Services in 2000, Trinity Health blends and carries on two rich traditions of serving persons in need.

Holy Cross Health System has its roots in the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, founded in 1841 by Father Basil Anthony Moreau.

During the Civil War, Holy Cross Sisters helped staff military hospitals, caring for the wounded of both the North and the South. Over the next 100 years, the Sisters opened hospitals and other health care facilities throughout the country, responding to the needs of the times.

In 1979, Holy Cross Health System was formed to bring unity as well as economic and professional solidarity to the health care organizations sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross.

From the mid 19th century to the present, the Holy Cross tradition has been one of meeting community needs and accepting inherent risks of changing and adapting but always being centered in reading the signs of the times and responding in faith and hope and with compassion.

In 1831, Catherine McAuley founded the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland, to follow Christ in his compassion for suffering people. Over the next 10 years, she and her Sisters established 14 foundations to serve the poor, the sick and the uneducated throughout Ireland and England.

After Catherine's death in 1841, the Sisters of Mercy took their mission to America where they responded to others' needs and suffering by founding hospitals, schools and orphanages, and establishing homes for women and girls at risk.

The Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of Detroit traces its roots to convents, schools and hospitals founded as early as the 1860s and ‘70s in Iowa and Michigan. In 1976, the Sisters created a health system, eventually called Mercy Health Services, to link and better support their hospitals.
