Each competitor starts the event with a 1500 metre swim course, followed by a 40 kilometre road bicycle race

All fifty female triathletes finished the swimming course, however only forty-five made the transition for the running leg and forty-four finished the entire competition. Gold medallist Kate Allen was in the 28th place after the second leg of the triathlon, coming from behind to pass Loretta Harrop
