College years

He played his college football at the University of Texas (Longhorns) where he earned a reputation as a fierocus hitter. In 1995, Brackens was on the All-American team and was also on the All-Southwest conference selection. He finished his career with the Longhorns ranking 8th on the all-time list with 24 sacks. He was also a key component the Longhorn team that went 10-1 and won the Southwest Conference and gained a berth to the 1996 Nokia Sugar Bowl against Virginia Tech.

NFL

He was taken in the second round of the 1996 NFL draft and played his entire professional career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was released in 2004 after a series of troubling leg injuries and operations. He had a career sack total of 55, and his lone Pro Bowl season came in 2000, a year in which he had 12 sacks and 8 forced fumbles for the year. At the moment of his retirement, he was the all-time sacks leader in Jacksonville Jaguars history. The moment in which he was let go was captured by NFL Films in "Jacksonville Jaguars: Inside the Training Camp", an unofficial version of the Hard Knocks TV series.
