Tom Johnson learnt his rugby while at Oxford Brookes University off the likes of Jack Martin, Will Dixon, Paddy Loughrey, Russell McCluskey, Carl Cimpoias, Tom Chapman and of course Nick Graham. After leaving school as a scrum half he developed into a mobile back row player for the uni and inspirational captain taking Brookes up into the Premier Division in the BUSA leagues.
He participated in the 2011 Churchill cup playing for England Saxons. He scored a try on his debut for the team playing against the United States. He then went on to play Tonga and eventually Canada in the final of the competition in which England Saxons won.
