 specialist. Dr. Ahrens is a prolific writer having published 5 books, over 100 papers, and over 40 scientific publications. His book "Essentials of Oxygenation" won the Book of the Year Award from the American Journal of Nursing. He is a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health and formerly served on the board of directors for AACN. Dr. Ahrens is a leading authority in sepsis; he travels around the country giving talks on the subject. His expertise has led to his nickname: "Sepsis Samurai."

Dr. Ahrens co-founded the company ICU-USA, Inc. in 1999. The company places a computer kiosk in public areas of a hospital which can be accessed by patients, families and hospital staff. The computer carries access to the ICU-USA website which is designed to provide educational information to hospital staff and medical information to patients and families. The website has been endorsed by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and has been named "The Official Patient and Family Website of the Society of Critical Care Medicine" by the Society of Critical Care Medicine

(FAAN). In 2006, the American Academy of Nursing selected Dr. Ahrens as one of its first Edge Runners. In order to be nominated as an Edge Runner, an individual must develop creative innovations meant to better care for patients, families and the community. Dr. Ahrens is most proud of his Flame of Excellence award, given to him in 2008 by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. The Flame of Excellence is only given to a maximum of three people each year. It is meant to recognize sustained contributions of excellence in acute and critical care nursing.

Personal life

Dr. Ahrens and Pat Ahrens have four children together: Tom, Matt, Dave and Maggie. They have one daughter-in-law, Luciana. They have three grandchildren: Gabriel, Sebastian and Mia.
