Alcalar and her daughter, Janene, were contestants on the February 17, 2010 episode of Toddlers and Tiaras, and at one point Alcalar was shown pulling her daughter off the floor as the girl cried that she did not want her hair done. The incident led to death threats against Alcalar, and her attorney suggested that the reaction to the show was what motivated the DFPS to investigate Alcalar.
The DFPS claimed that the show had nothing to do with the suspension. Nevertheless, the publicity after the closing forced Alcalar to go into hiding after more death threats and threats to kidnap her 11-year-old son.
