History

The school traces its origins to 1881. It was originally known as Lake High School, since the school served students in the Township of Lake. That township was annexed to Chicago in 1889, and the school became part of the Chicago Public Schools

 system. Lake High was rebuilt in 1905, and in 1915, the school was renamed in honor of Edward Tilden, a former banker and president of the Chicago Board of Education. In 1917, the school became an all-boys' technical school, and it remained so until the 1960s, when it became a general, co-educational high school.
