Shields is a Presbyterian Christian and frequently attends church services in his hometown of Huntington Beach. He attends University California Berkeley where he is studing American Studies. He enjoys bodysurfing in his spare time.

Shields earned his first individual medal, a silver, in the 100 m butterfly, finishing behind compatriot Tim Phillips
