Mildred Hubble (The Worst Witch)
Mildred Hubble is a major character in The Worst Witch children's book series by Jill Murphy. She is the main protagonist in all the books. She is friends with Maud Moonshine and Enid Nightshade and has a strong rivalry with Ethel Hallow and Drusilla Paddock....

returns to Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches for the Summer Term of her first year. When Miss Hardbroom welcomes them back, she introduces them to a new girl who has transferred from another witch academy, Enid Nightshade. Much to Miss Hardbroom's chagrin and disgust, Miss Cackle has trusted Mildred to look after Enid and help her settle in.
The next morning, Maud creeps to Mildred's room to chat with her about Enid. Maud discovers that Mildred and Enid will be doing the things that Maud and Mildred normally do together (e.g. going to assembly together and take detours to the gym and labs). Maud is jealous, and storms away in anger.
After the morning bell rings, Mildred goes to Enid's room to start showing her around the academy, only to discover that Enid has smuggled a monkey

celebration, much to the chagrin of the pupils (Miss Cackle's birthday is the most boring celebration of the year).
During a chanting lesson with Miss Bat after assembly, Enid deliberately sings awkwardly and out of tune, causing Mildred to burst into fits of hysterical laughter. Mildred gets into trouble with Miss Bat, who sends her to Miss Cackle's office. When going up to her room, Mildred decides to check on the grey monkey in Enid's room. As soon as the door is opened however, the monkey escapes. When chasing it down the stairs, Mildred bumps into Miss Hardbroom, who sends her to the library to study.
After spotting the monkey on top of one of the castle towers Mildred jumps onto her broomstick and disturbs a gym lesson with Miss Drill. Miss Hardbroom turns the monkey into its original form, a normal regulation black cat

. Enid secretly reveals to Mildred that she turned the cat into a monkey for fun.
Maud, meanwhile, is so angry with Mildred, she has done the most spiteful thing possible- she has started hanging out with Ethel Hallow, Mildred's arch enemy from the previous term.
When Sports Day arrives, Mildred and Enid become partners. Cynical and pessimistic towards the fact that she and Mildred will not win any of the sports, Enid decides to try some spells out on some of them. When the two girls come up to the pole-vaulting contest, Mildred springs high into the air and lands into Miss Hardbroom's study via the window (Enid tried a spell out on Mildred's pole). Mildred messes up a creamed tea that Miss Hardbroom had set up for herself when Sports Day had ended. Moments later, Miss Cackle, Miss Hardbroom, and Miss Drill arrive and Miss Cackle angrily says that if there is any more bother from Mildred that term, she will be expelled.
Determined to avoid expulsion for the rest of the term, Mildred turns down and refuses every daring request and suggestion Enid makes.
Enid, however, is determined to skip Miss Cackle's boring birthday celebration, and she hides in a store cupboard and pulls Mildred in with her. A sneaky Ethel Hallow locks the door behind them. Maud, who has only been pretending to be Ethel's friend out of jealousy, immediately realises where her true loyalties lie, and refuses to have anything more to do with her.
Inside the cupboard, the two girls find an old broomstick that they use to fly out of a slit-window that leads into the assmebly hall. As look would have it, Maud is on stage, having been chosen to recite the first years' contribution to the recital. Maud introduces Mildred and Enid as a surprise broomstick display item. The display is a disaster, but Miss Cackle decides it is the thought that counts, and praise them highly. The three girls become friends.
