The Valley Hospital is a fully accredited, acute care, not-for-profit hospital serving approximately 440,000 people in 32 towns in Bergen County and adjoining communities. Its current bed capacity is 451. In 2010, 51,497 individuals were admitted to Valley, 72,188 people were treated in the Emergency Department and 3,006 babies were born. The Valley Hospital is an affiliate of NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System.

In 2005 The Valley Hospital welcomed noted cardiac surgeon and researcher Alex Zapolanski, M.D., who joined the Valley Columbia Heart Center as Director of Cardiac Surgery. The Center’s cardiac surgeons, who, in addition to Dr. Zapolanski, include Jason Sperling, M.D., Mariano Brizzio, M.D., and Juan B. Grau, M.D., provide comprehensive cardiac surgical procedures for the full spectrum of heart disease. The Valley Columbia Heart Center is a program of The Valley Hospital, the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System, and the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. The service includes a full range of diagnostic and interventional cardiac treatment services, including cardiac surgery, coronary angioplasty, and electrophysiology studies. The Valley Columbia Heart Center has consistently been recognized with a 3-star rating – the highest designation of quality and clinical excellence – from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. This distinction acknowledges a strong commitment by The Valley Hospital to provide an outstanding inpatient experience. The Valley Hospital’s Emergency Department has also been recognized for service excellence under the J.D. Power and Associates. Valley is a two-time recipient of the prestigious Magnet Designation for Nursing Excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The Magnet Award – a four-year designation – is the nursing profession’s highest honor.
In 2007 the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery designated The Valley Hospital’s bariatric surgery program a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. The Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.
Also in 2007, Valley welcomed distinguished thoracic surgeon and oncology researcher Robert J. Korst, M.D., as Medical Director of the Daniel & Gloria Blumenthal Cancer Center and Director of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Korst was previously a member of the departments of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Genetic Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
Certified by the American College of Surgeons as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program, Valley is known for its centers specializing in the diagnosis, care, and treatment of prostate and lung cancer, its surgical oncology program, its radiation oncology program, and its comprehensive oncology clinical trials program.
For seven consecutive years – 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 – Valley Health System, which includes The Valley Hospital, Valley Home Care, and Valley Health Medical Group, was named one of the 50 Best Places to Work in New Jersey by NJBIZ, New Jersey’s only weekly business publication. Valley was named the top health system employer for 2006 and 2007. The hospital is also known for its maternity service, The Center for Childbirth, which welcomes more than 3,000 babies into the world each year—and its state of New Jersey-designated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit overseen by four neonatologists. Valley’s Maternal Fetal Medicine Program provides care to women at special risk because of an underlying medical condition or multiple fetuses. The department is one of the few in the country certified to offer nuchal translucency testing, an ultrasound technique used to screen for Down syndrome.
In early 2002, Valley opened a 128000 square feet (11,891.6 m²) facility in Paramus, New Jersey. The facility, named the Robert & Audrey Luckow Pavilion, is home to the George R. Jaqua Same Day Services Center, including operating rooms, a pain management program, and a complementary medicine program, and the Daniel & Gloria Blumenthal Cancer Center.
In January 2006, The Valley Hospital Fertility Center moved into a new state-of-the-art facility at the hospital’s Robert & Audrey Luckow Pavilion in Paramus. The new facility includes a surgical suite and laboratories for andrology, endocrinology, and embryology services.
Also in 2006, Valley opened The Center for Sleep Medicine, a state-of-the-art sleep lab to evaluate sleep disorders in adults. The Center complements Valley’s highly recognized Pediatric Sleep Disorders and Apnea Center.
Additional Valley services include a comprehensive Breast Center led by breast surgeon Laura Klein, M.D., an outpatient chronic dialysis program, a Pediatric service that includes an intensive care unit. Treatment innovations introduced at Valley over the past few years include PET scanning, TomoTherapy to deliver radiation therapy to treat cancer, Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery for lung cancer, and the establishment of the Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery Center.
