In its heyday it was viewed as a prestigious intellectual forum. It ceased publication in 1968 due to the widening gap between editor and publisher Max Ascoli's hawkish stance on the Vietnam War
on the one hand, and the opinions of readers and advertisers on the other.
A 1962 article mentions it as "being rated only behind Time
