's "Hundred Kingdoms" era. It is an era blurred in with the Ages of Chaos at the tail end. Breeding programs are no more, but wars are still fought with terrible Laran weapons.

Damian Deslucido wants to unify Darkover under his rule. He is supported by his nedestro brother Rumail, a powerful but ruthless laranzu. King Rafael Hastur II tries to restrict the use of laran weapons and establish the Comyn council in order to bring the warring factions of Darkover together. When he learns that the Deslucidos have the gift of lying under truthspell, he is forced to stop them, otherwise the basis for cooperation in the Comyn council would be lost.
