Mission statement

The goals of a Buckley education are that every boy learn fundamental skills, gain self-confidence through disciplined thought and action, develop personal integrity and respect for others, and discover the joy of learning and the satisfaction of pursuing excellence.

Organization

The School is divided into three divisions: Beginners (kindergarten) through Class III form the Lower School, Class IV through Class VI form the Middle School, and Class VII through Class IX form the Upper School. The grades are referred to as classes followed by their number (expressed in roman numerals). The school's headmaster is Mr. Gregory O'Melia and the school's assistant headmistress is Mrs. Caroline Berry.

Sports

Lower School
Beginners have a daily sports period in the morning, consisting of wrestling, indoor soccer, physical fitness and a variety of games. In the afternoon, gymnastics, creative movement and playground activities are offered. In Classes I-III, boys are instructed in the fundamentals of soccer, gymnastics, baseball, wrestling, physical fitness and a variety of games. There are intramural activities in soccer and baseball.

Middle School
Classes IV-VI meet one morning and four afternoons. The classes consist of instruction and active participation in baseball, soccer, wrestling, basketball, gymnastics, football, lacrosse, track and field, physical fitness and various games. Some choice of activities is afforded to the boys in Class V and Class VI. Physical fitness and skill development are emphasized. Intramural leagues allow the boys the opportunity to benefit from team play and friendly
competition.

Upper School
Classes VII-IX meet one morning and four afternoons per week. Since the boys have received a firm foundation in many sports during the previous years, they are now given the opportunity to specialize. Each boy chooses to play on one athletic team during each of the three seasons and is active in interscholastic competition. The following sports are offered: cross country running, football, and soccer in the fall; basketball, gymnastics, wrestling, and strength training in the winter; and baseball, lacrosse, and track and field in the spring. In all sports there is a varsity team, while a junior varsity team is offered for soccer, basketball, and baseball. Buckley is a charter member of the Manhattan Private Middle School League and the Metropolitan Private Middle School Track and Field Association.
