based company that specializes in insulated tumblers.

Tervis History

In 1946 two Detroit engineers, Frank Cotter and G. Howlett Davis, created the world's first insulated tumbler, using air as the insulating material between the two tumbler walls. The brand name Tervis comes from the last three letters of the two engineers' surnames (Cotter and Davis).

The Winslow family purchased the product rights in the 1950s and incorporated The Tervis Tumbler Company in 1967, moving manufacturing to its current location in Florida. The Donelly family now operates the company as a privately-held firm.

Products and Marketing

The main marketing aspects of Tervis Tumblers are:
  • All Tervis products are "made in the USA" (manufactured at its Florida facility).
  • Tervis Tumblers come with an unconditional lifetime guarantee. Any Tervis Tumbler, even if currently owned by someone other than the original owner, can be replaced free of charge (all Tervis tumblers feature the company name on the bottom, which along with a return form is all the company requires for replacement). Shipping the damaged or defective item to Tervis is at the customer's expense; Tervis pays to ship the replacement item. If the original design is not available a similar design or plain tumbler is substituted. The guarantee does not apply to ice buckets, lids and straws, or personalized items.

In addition to its in-house designs, Tervis carries marquis licensing agreements with all four of the major American sports leagues (MLB

Most of the company's designs are available in four primary tumbler sizes: 10 ounce, 12 ounce, 16 ounce, and 24 ounce; some products are also available in 10-ounce "wavy" tumblers (the "wavy" refers to the tumbler shape having a ribbed surface, the standard tumblers feature a flat surface) and 15-ounce mugs (Tervis previously sold 2.5-quart ice buckets but has since discontinued this item). In addition, the company sells "clear" (no design) 8-ounce tumblers and accessories such as lids and straws.
