History

On 31 May 1999, Terna is established within the Enel Group, by way of implementation of Italian Legislative Decree No. 79/99 which within the context of the process for the deregulation of the Italian electricity sector, sanctioned the separation between ownership and management of the national transmission grid. On 11 May 2004, the Prime Minister's Decree is issued which establishes the criteria, formalities and conditions relating to the unification between the ownership and the management of the national transmission grid, and the corporate governance system.

Terna is the electricity transmission system operator. Terna owns 63578 kilometres (39,505.6 mi) in Italy.

The remaining nearly 53.3% is held by other institutional and reatil investitors. and retail investors. 67% of its share capital is held by Italian shareholders, while the remaining 33% is held by foreign institutional investors.
