The station connected the Beenleigh line with the Ipswich line. The service between Yeerongpilly and Corinda had operated only during peak hour periods on weekdays. Trains running to Corinda via this route usually originate at Shorncliffe or Ferny Grove and may terminate at Bowen Hills.

Tennyson has a short platform and can accommodate only three cars at a time. Passengers wishing to use Tennyson must ensure that they are in the front three cars of any train.

It has been proposed to close the station in 2011.. In June 2011, passenger services has ceased on the line, along with the closing of the station.
