Mission & General Information

TAWIRI is a public institution that was established under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism in 1980 with the mandate to carry out and co-ordinate wildlife research in the United Republic of Tanzania. TAWIRI is responsible for supervising all wildlife research related activities in Tanzania. The mission is to:
  • Carry out research on various aspects of wildlife and biodiversity in general.
  • Co-ordinate and supervise all wildlife research in the country.
  • Advise the Government and wildlife management authorities on sustainable conservation of wildlife resources.
  • Facilitate the involvement of Tanzanians in wildlife research including training.


The headquarters of TAWIRI is in Arusha, Northern Tanzania. It has sub-offices in several other locations including the Serengeti (Seronera).

TAWIRI works closely with Tanzania National Parks and the Division of Wildlife.
