The company was founded in Seattle, WA in 1976 by Dane Butcher who was at that time working as a recording engineer. Symetrix currently specializes in audio DSP (digital signal processing) hardware and software. In the 1980’s the company engineered one of the first channel strip voice processors, the Symetrix 528. History

From the mid seventies through the mid nineties Symetrix produced various signal processors using analog technology including compressor/limiters, noise gates, and equalizers as well as telephone interfaces for broadcast applications. The late 90's ushered in a paradigm shift in the Symetrix core technology. The product line became dominated by DSP-based products primarily targeted at the commercial sound market. The SymNet technology, introduced in 2001, became the focus of product development as many older analog products were phased out.

As of 2011 the company continues to focus on the development and world wide sales of general purpose and application specific digital signal processing products.
