Call to develop Pulmedu as pilgrim transit camp

PATHANAMTHITTA: Sabarimala Ayyappa Seva Samajam state general-secretary Swami Ayyappadas has sought the Government and the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) to develop Pulmedu as a pilgrim transit camp on the lines of Nilackal.
Delivering the presidential address at the Ayyappa devotees meet as part of the 65th Ranni Hindu Convention on Wednesday, Swami Ayyappadas said that the Sabarimala Master Plan report highlighted the need for giving thrust to the development of Pulmedu as pilgrim base camp to reduce the overcrowding at Pampa and on the trekking path between Pampa and Sannidhanam.
“Basic facilities such as drinking water, resting place, toilet facilities and free food should be provided to the pilgrims at Pulmedu,” Swami Ayyappadas said.
Raise compensation to `10 lakh
Swami Ayyappadas said that the State Government should enhance the compensation amount to `10 lakh to each of the tragedy victim instead of `5 lakh.
He said the Government should bear the entire amount of compensation of `10 lakh each to all the 102 victims of the tragedy.
he said that the Government asking the TDB to share the compensation amount to the Pulmedu victims would be unfair and discriminatory.
“The Government should take immediate steps to pay the compensation amount to the families since 92 out of the 102 victims were from the to below poverty line category,” Swami Ayyappadas said.Noted playback singer K G Jayan inaugurated the Ayyappa devotees meet.
Hindu Aikyavedi district president K P Soman delivered the key-note address.
Thiruvabharanapatha Samrakshana Samithi convener Prasad Kuzhikala, T K Rajappan, Rajesh Anamadom and P R Gopalan offered felicitations.

Kumbhamela planned at Pampa Festival to be held next year PATHANAMTHITTA: The Ayyappa Unity Movement (AUM), a newly formed confederation of various Ayyappa devotees' organisations in the State, will organise its first Sabari Kumbhamela at Pampa on the foothills of Sabarimala in 2007. At its first meeting at the Pandalam Palace on Saturday, the AUM executive committee decided to conduct the proposed Kumbhamela once in 12 years, on the lines of the famous Kumbhamela of Allahabad. Pandalam Palace managing committee president P. Ramavarma Raja and Swami Ayyappadas were elected president and secretary respectively of the new organisation. Hindu Aikyavedi organising secretary Kummanam Rajashekharan presented a project proposal for the propagation of the Ayyappa cult and to spread the message of Harivarasanam, when the popular divine lullaby is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2006-'07. According to Mr. Rajashekharan, the Harivarasanam lyrics written by Kambakkudy Sundareswara Aiyer was first sung in Sabarimala by Vimochananda Swami in 1956 and hence the AUM decision to observe 2006 as the Golden Jubilee year of the hymn. The AUM would hold a congregation of Guruswamis— Guruswami Sangamom— in Pandalam on November 5 and the Guruswamis from different parts of the country
would attend the ceremony, Mr. Raja said. He said the organisation would observe 2006 as the year to propagate the message and philosophy of the Harivarasanam lullaby through a systematic house-contact programme by its volunteers. Swami Ayyappadas said that full-time volunteers would be deployed for the propagation of Ayyappa-dharma and the AUM would organise a 10-day workshop for them at Erumely on July 20. The organisation would also reach a picture of Lord Ayyappa and the sacred Vibhooti (holy ash) to not less than one-lakh households in the State in 2006, he said. He said the AUM volunteers would also conduct house-contact programmes in the tribal as well as backward class settlements as part of its mission to spread the Ayyappa cult in the coming months. He said that the AUM
would open 1,500 Ayyappa Gurukulams in different parts of the State and each Gurukulam would start a Manikanta Patasala attached to it. 41- day Mandalam season to be observed as holy period

The Ayyappa Maha Sangamom, congregation of Ayyappa devotees, organised by Sabarimala Ayyappa Seva Samajom (SASS) at the Mahadevar Temple at Chengannur on Tuesday has decided to observe the 41-day annual Mandalam pilgrim season at Sabarimala a holy period in South India.

The meeting attended by Ayyappa devotees from different parts of the State as well as the neighbouring States of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, has also called upon the Government to declare Makaravilakku day a State holiday.

Addressing the meet, Mr Kummanam Rajashekharan, Samajom organising secretary, said the Hindu households across the State would observe the holy month by reciting the religious texts, `Ayyappa Bhagavathom’ by Traiyyakshara Chaitanya and `Sree Bhoothanathopakhyanom’ by Kallarackal Krishnan Kartha. Mr Rajashekaharan said there were increasing demands from different quarters for translating these two texts that depict legends of Lord Ayyappa and the Ayyappa cult into different South Indian languages as well as Hindi so that the observation of holy season could be extended to various other parts of the country too.

The meeting has also decided to illuminate houses with oil lamps, singing Ayyappa bhajans and chanting Ayyappa mantra, during the twilight hour on the Makaravilakku day coinciding with the auspicious deeparadhana at Lord Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala.

Action plan

The meeting has chalked out a comprehensive action plan to develop `Poonkavanom’ at all Hindu households by growing fruit trees and flowering plants in their courtyard.

Mr Rajashekharan said each household would plant sapling of atleast one tree sapling in their courtyard on the Makaravilakku day. The Guruswamis attached to Samajom would supply saplings to every household, spreading the message of Ayyappa cult in the next two months, he said.

50 service centres

The Samajom would open as many as 50 service centres for free feeding of Sabarimala pilgrims and to provide them medicated drinking water and shelter in different parts of the State during the forthcoming Mandalam-Makaravilakku season.

Mr Rajashekharan said the Samajom was getting very good response for the Annadanam to feed Sabarimala pilgrims at its camps during the annual pilgrim season. The SASS volunteers would also collect ice and vegetables from the households across the State for the proposed Annadanam, he said.

Senior Sabarimala Tantri (chief priest), Kandararu Maheswararu, inaugurated the meet by lighting a ceremonial lamp at the Mahadevar Temple auditorium.
