These positions are assigned to senior noncommissioned officers (SNCOs), as opposed to the titles NCOIC (which are held by junior NCOs) and Chief or Director (which is assigned to commissioned officers as the head of the section).

Superintendent is also used as the title of the senior officer at the United States Air Force Academy
