It was created in the winter of 1992 to cater to the underground scene of independent music. Its roots were in the new sub-culture rising in the 90s. Many of musical genres, such as hardcore punk

, were difficult to find in an average record store. It was started by Gavin Frederick, who worked as a radio DJ for Georgia Tech

. He would play many obscure bands that were not played on popular radio stations.
