Currently consisting of two distinct routes, Steuben Street was one complete route prior to the construction of the Staten Island Expressway in the early 1960s.

The first leg stretches approximately 0.6 mile (0.965604 km) from Hylan Boulevard

 to the Staten Island Expressway. This section of roadway, which possesses a concrete and tree-lined median, carries Hylan Boulevard's traffic between Rosebank and Grasmere. Although very residential in nature, one landmark is Brady's Pond Park which is half owned by the City of New York and half owned by the homes that surround it, and is managed by the Cameron Club, a private organization consisting of the residents who hold title to the pond.

The second leg stretches approximately 0.5 mile (0.80467 km) from the Staten Island Railway

. Like the first leg of the route, the second is also very residential but includes such landmarks as the campus of Concord High School and the Muslim Majlis Mosque, which opened in 1985 as the first Islamic institution to open in Staten Island.

Between the Staten Island Expressway and Staten Island Railway right-of-ways, Kansas Avenue carries the route of Steuben Street.
