Stephen Alexander Martin was born on 13 APR, 1959 at Bangor, Co. Down - his mother came from Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh and his father from Portadown, Co. Armagh. He was educated at Bangor Central Primary School for 2 years before attending Bloomfield Road Primary School in Bangor, and then Bangor Grammar School. In 1985 he graduated from University of Ulster, Jordanstown with an BA in Sport and Leisure Studies, and in 2001 UUJ awarded him an Honorary Doctorate for services to sport. As well as being a regular on the Bangor Grammer School hockey team he was also on the school's golf team that beat Summerhill College Sligo in the 1974 Irish Schools Match Play Championships Final. The other players he played with on the school's golf team were his older brother Philip Martin, Colin Crozier, Billy Pope and David Feherty [former professional golfer]. Playing hockey for Great Britain he has competed in three Olympics.

His debut for Great Britain was in 1983 against USA, and the following year he played in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics earning a bronze medal and five more caps for Britain. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics he came on as a sub in the final, for his 50th British cap, and won an Olympic gold medal. He represented Great Britain at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics as their vice-captain and played in six of the games with his last one against New Zealand, after which he retired from international hockey. The Great Britain team finished sixth in Barcelona. He has also played for Great Britain in ten Champions Trophy tournaments- winning one silver medal [1985] and one bronze medal [1984], and out of his total of 94 caps with Great Britain he was captain twenty times and scored four goals.

Having first played for Ireland in 1980 against France, Stephen Martin has won a total of 105 Irish caps, was captain for twenty of those games, and scored ten goals. One of Ireland's best ever defenders, he also has 30 Irish indoor international hockey caps. For Ireland he has played in three European Cups [i.e. EuroHockey Nations Championships in 1983,1987, 1991], the 1990 Hockey World Cup in Lahore, Pakistan and won a silver medal with Ireland at the 1978 European U21 Championships in Dublin, and the following year in Paris he played in the first ever Junior Hockey World Cup. He started his hockey career with Bangor Hockey Club, and went on to win the Irish Senior Cup twice with Belfast YMCA [1983, 1985]. When they sold their ground he played with Holywood 87, and spent his last four years as player/coach with Newry Hockey Club until his retirement in 1998. Dr. Stephen Martin has held posts as Director of Coaching at Ulster Hockey, worked in Performance Dept at Sports Council NI, was Deputy Chief Executive of the British Olympic Association, and in 2006 he took up his new role as Chief Executive of the Olympic Council of Ireland. He was awarded a Texaco Sports Award for hockey in 1988, and received a MBE for services to hockey in 1993. He lives in Holywood, Co. Down and stays in Malahide when working in Dublin, and his wife is a part-time teacher at Priory Integrated College, Holywood.
