History

The junction of State Route 70 with U.S. 31 is approximately 25 miles (40.2 km) highway miles south of downtown Birmingham, Alabama

. Until the mid-1990s, State Route 70 between Columbiana and Calera passed through a mostly rural area of the county. Since then, numerous new housing developments have been constructed along this highway route, to house part of the growning population of Shelby County. Besides Columbiana and Calera, State Route 70 does not pass through any other incorporated towns or villages.
