Very few pupils are from backgrounds other than White British. There are a small number of students looked after by adults other than their own parents. The sixth form operates in partnership with another local secondary school from the Workington Sixth Form Centre. The school has had specialist status for science since 2003.

The school holds Artsmark Silver, the local authority's Inclusion Mark and the International School Award. It has recognition of the school's programme of Rights, Respect and Responsibilities and Healthy School Status. It is a lead school for the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning programme and with the support of the local authority is leading on developing the Adventure Learning programme.

The severe flooding of wide areas of the town in November 2009, significantly affected the lives of many staff and students. Journeys to and from the school were particularly long and arduous.
