South High kept the original Springfield High School building, located at 700 South Limestone Street near the city's downtown, which was modeled after the Library of Congress and renowned for its large white dome. South also kept Springfield High's nickname, "Wildcats," and school colors of navy and gold. North High, was nicknamed "Panthers" and used red, white and blue as its school colors. The two high schools shared Evans Stadium, which was used by Springfield High, until North High built its own stadium on the campus of its school. In 2008, North and South merged back into "Springfield High School." A new high school building and campus was built at the location of the old North High. The new Springfield High took the "Wildcats" nickname, adopted blue, gold and white as its colors and continues to use Evans Stadium for football. It also uses the on-campus stadium North High built for other sporting events. The school district uses the old Springfield High/South High building for administrative purposes, but is no longer allowed to use it for teaching or classroom purposes per state guidelines.
Currently, Springfield High is under the direction of Dr. Christopher Eugene Shaffer, and was run by a small-school system. This system is the basis that Springfield High is split into four wings over three floors, plus the main hall east and west wings (in the 2nd floor, which is the main one and at where most electives are), it includes Problem-Based Learning, principled by Mrs. Kathy Lee, built on the basis of "core curriculum, advanced placement, and the International Baccalaureate program". Problem-Based Learning is on the 1st floor, the lowest of the three, on the west side. The small school of Humanities, principled by Mr. Kirk Koennecke, is established on the basis of "humanities and cultures around the world and in our community", and offers a variety of different studies. It is located on the eastern half of the first floor. The Global Perspectives small school is located on the third floor, western half. It is principled by Mrs. Kristin Barker, under the basis of, "The global perspectives across our world". Finally, Leadership school, principled by Mr. Mike Skavaril, is the eastern half of the third floor, and run on the basis, "Shaping today's leaders for tomorrow's world. Although it is titled "small schools", they are in no way separated by walls or doors, rather, the floors (east and west) are in the shape of a slowly rotating half circle stacked on top of one another. In the second year of Springfield High Schools opening a decision was made to change the names of the four small schools starting the 2010-2011 school year no longer having the four small schools Problem Based Learning, Humanities, Leadership and Global Perspectives, starting fall of 2010 those four small schools were transformed into five separate academies these academies are meant to allow each student to join with students and staff with similar interests and needs. The five academies are called Preparatory Academy, Exploratory Academy, STEMS Academy, International Arts & Communications Academy and Health & Human Services Academy. Academy Selection Materials were to be sent home on April 15, and were due back with student and parent signatures on April 22 turn the end of the 2009-2010 school year.
Springfield High is also an International Baccalaureate school.
