. The village was named after the farm "Spikkestad", as the station was built on its lands. In the early 1970s, a tunnel was built which made the trip between these places shorter, and most of the train track was closed. Spikkestad became the end terminus of Spikkestadbanen, and there are still trains running every hour.

 of the town at the end of the 19th century, factories and schools, as well as an influx of new inhabitants made the village into more than just a train station. Its current population is between 2000 and 3000.

Spikkestad and the area surrounding it has a great history - dating back to the Vikings. Once a year, you can do an organised walk called "oldtidsveien" (trans: oldtimesroad), which takes you along sites such as a viking burial site. It runs from Gullaug
