History

The newspaper was founded in 1884 as the evening Fort Smith Times. In 1909, it merged with the Fort Smith News Record, another evening paper to become the Fort Smith Times Record. John Parks and George Carney bought the Times Record in 1920, and three years later bought Fort Smith's daily morning paper, the Southwest American, which had began publication in 1907. The two papers continued to publish separate editions during the week, publishing a single edition on Sunday known as the Southwest Times Record. Donald W. Reynolds

In 1969, Donrey halted separate delivery of the afternoon Times Record and morning American, merging the papers into a single seven-day morning paper under the Southwest Times Record name. It has published daily under that moniker since.
