History

South Point High School was constructed as the new campus of Belmont High School. The 27 acres (109,265.2 m²) of land was purchased in 1962. In 1963, the first plans were designed for a 2-wing facility. In September 1964, 748 students and 30 teachers returned to Belmont High School in its new location; the cafeteria was completed in November. In 1969, Cramerton High School consolidated with Belmont High School to form its present name of South Point High School. Enrollment increased to 900 students.

In 1997, Gaston County transitioned from a junior high school system to middle school

s. The 9th graders increased enrollment to 1100 students. New additions were made to the school in 1995 and 1999. Today, the school occupies 156485 square feet (14,537.9 m²) on a 33.7 acres (136,379.2 m²) campus.

Athletics

The South Point High School Red Raiders were winners of the 3AA NCHSAA Football Championship in 2009, 3A NCHSAA Football Championships in 2003 and 1979, the 1971 WNCHSAA 3-A Football Co-championship, and the 2011 and 1981 NCHSAA Baseball Championships. John and Phillip Goodwin won the schools first 3-A NCHAA Individual wrestling state titles and in 2006 they repeated in 2007, making them the first state champions and also first two time state champs for South Point.
