, co-educational college that started as an elementary school in 1950, transitioned into a high school in 1952, and finally became a college in 1993.

History

SPAC began its operation in Digos, Davao del Sur in 1950, as an elementary school. The school became a Junior Academy in 1952, with 236 students enrolled. Soon over crowded condition necessitated a larger area. About 20 hectares of land were purchased through the effort of the late Ruperto Sumicad Sr., at Barrio Camanchiles, Matanao, Davao del Sur at a cost of P7, 000 some P1, 000 was contributed by Frank La Sage and his wife, and the remaining P1, 000 by the Southern Mindanao Mission, now the Davao Mission. The Far Easter Division allocated P40, 000 and the South Philippine Union gave P20, 000 for the construction of the school building.

The academy transferred to its present site in 1958-59. The third year and fourth year high school levels were recognized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports in 1959. The first principal was Pastor Jose M. Atil. In 1955 SPAC academy received the five-year accreditation from the government-accrediting agency (ACSC).

In the summer of 1993 during the Teacher Secondary Convention in Mountain View College, the principal of Southern Mindanao Academy, Jimmy Faderogaya, together with Dr. Milton Thorman met with the South Philippine Union Conference president, Elder Paterno Diaz, and discussed the possibility of converting SMA into college.

Thanks be to God through Dr. Milton Thorman, the seemingly hopeless effort of putting up a second Adventist college in Mindanao finally pushed through.

Dr. Shozo Tabuchi, then the commencement speaker of Southern Mindanao Academy discussed with the Mission Board heady by Pastor Vicente S. Paypa the possibility of making a feasibility study which was immediately made, and Alberto D. Alojado, the academy treasurer was delegated to bring it to Bacolod City during the meeting.

The President of SPUC, Elder Paterno M. Diaz, requested the Union Director to organize an evaluating team. Dr. Gerundio U. Ellacer headed the survey team and the members were Dr. Remelito A. Tabingo, Abraham O. Neri, Epifanio N. Ciron, SS Geviera, and Jonathan C. Catolico, Ex-officio member.

In November 4, 1993, the evaluating team recommended SMA to the SPUC Executive Committee to be the second Adventist college in Mindanao. Application papers for the college were processed by Dr. Jonathan C. Catolico to the APD while Jimmy F. Faderogaya on the other hand was doubling his effort in processing the application papers to the CHED and the Security and Exchange Commission. The General Conference Department of Education headed by Dr. Agripino Segovia, together with Dr. Eager and Dr. Oliver Koh proclaimed in the General Conference Headquarters approved that SPAC be the second Adventist College in Mindanao.

The CHED personnel came to SPAC headed by Dr. Minerva Fabros, Engr. Louie Perez, Mrs. Realina Dela Peña, Mrs. Zenaida Turtogo, and Mr. Feliciano Tamondong under the supervision of Dr. Glory Magdale, Dr. Eloisa Paderanga and the late Mrs. Severina Villarin.

The CHED permit to operate and the SEC certificates were received during the same occasion. It was a grand day and a thrilling moment that the Davao Mission Board chairman, Pastor Vicente S. Paypa, and the SPUC chairman, Elder Paterno M. Diaz accepted the challenge of developing SPAC. The first president of SPAC was Dr. Jonathan C. Catolico with concurrent capacity as SPUC Director of Education (1993-1996).
