He was considered close to Kanshi Ram
and contributed immensely to the establishment of Bahujan Samaj Party
(BSP) but later parted to form his own political outfit, Apna Dal after organising a Kurmi Swabhiman rally in Lucknow, due to differences with BSP's current chief Mayawati
. He had served as the national president of the Apna Dal since the formation of the party in November 1995. Sone Lal Patel died in a road accident in Kanpur on Oct 17, 2009.The party people have been demanding for a CBI probe into the incident, however the government is paying no heed to the plea of partymen and family.after the demise of sonelal patel, his wife krishna patel has taken over as the national president and daughter Anupriya Patel as the General Secretary of the party. Anupriya is a graduate from Lady Sriram College, Delhi University and an MBA as well.The party is running successfully in central and eastern parts of the state. recently, it expressed its power and presence by organising a massive " SAHABHAGITA MAHARALLY" on 28th february, 2011 in Lucknow.In a meeting of the state executive committee held on 15th march 2011, it has been decided to stage 3 day state wide protest on 25th, 26th and 27th april,2011 and 2 days cadre training camp of state and national level office bearers on 6th and 7th may 2011 in Lucknow. f>http://www.indianexpress.com/news/sone-lal-patels-wife-new-apna-dal-chief/530860/1
