Somesvara III was a Western Chalukya king and son of Vikramaditya VI and Queen Chandaladevi. A king more inclined towards literature, Someshvara III had to face the invasion of the Hoysala Vishnuvardhana but was able to suppress him. He lost some territory as the Vengi
Vengi
The Vengi kingdom extended from the Godavari River in the north to Mount Mahendragiri in the southeast and to just south of the banks of River Krishna in the south of India.  Chalukyas tried to gain freedom, but was able to maintain most of the vast empire left behind by his famous father. He was a scholar of merit and wrote the Sanskrit classic Manasollasa. He held titles like Tribhuvannamalla, Bhulokamalla and Sarvanjyabhupa.

The Manasollasa

The (the refresher of the mind) or the (the magical stone that fulfils desires) is an cyclopedic work in Sanskrit composed in 1051 Saka era (c.1129 CE). The Manasollasa, though purporting to be the work of Chalukya Somesvara III, is most likely a composition of one or more of his court poets. The work is intended for all classes in the state. This work is divided into 100 s (chapters) which are grouped into five s (twenties) and each chapter deals with a specific topic. It lays under contribution, many older treatises on medicine, magic, veterinary science, the valuing of precious stones and pearls, fortifications, painting and music, games and amusements and on the many other subjects it treats of. This work is valuable as a record of the state of knowledge on many topics at that time. The number of s in this work is:
