is the designation of a back-to-back high-voltage direct current
High-voltage direct current
A high-voltage, direct current electric power transmission system uses direct current for the bulk transmission of electrical power, in contrast with the more common alternating current systems. For long-distance transmission, HVDC systems may be less expensive and suffer lower electrical losses...

The HVDC back-to-back facility Shi Shinano uses thyristor
Thyristor
A thyristor is a solid-state semiconductor device with four layers of alternating N and P-type material. They act as bistable switches, conducting when their gate receives a current trigger, and continue to conduct while they are forward biased .Some sources define silicon controlled rectifiers and...

static inverters and went into service in 1977. The Shin-Shinano operates with a dc link voltage of 125 kV. The station was initially rated 300 megawatts. In 1992 the maximum transferable power was uprated to 600 megawatts.

Frequency Converter Station

The Shin Shinano Frequency Converter Station is one of three frequency converter stations
Frequency changer
A frequency changer or frequency converter is an electronic device that converts alternating current of one frequency to alternating current of another frequency. The device may also change the voltage, but if it does, that is incidental to its principal purpose.Traditionally, these devices were...
