Lieutenant General
Shigeru Katagiri (1892–1944) was a senior officer in the Imperial Japanese Army
during World War II
.
He was the commanding officer of 27th Cavalry Regiment in 1936, before being attached as the Chief of Staff 1st Division between 1937 until 1939. He was then attached to the Army Cavalry School and later appointed as the commanding officer of the 1st Cavalry Brigade. He was attached to the Inspectorate of Cavalry in 1940 and became the Vice-Director of Remount Policy in 1941. He was appointed to the post of General Officer Commanding the 20th Division
in New Guinea
in 1943. His headquarters was near Gali, New Guinea, and after the Australian landings at Finschhafen he marched with his troops 200 miles (321.9 km) to reinforce Finschhafen. He gathered his forces at Sattelberg
but was forced to reteat after being defeated during the battle of Sattelberg
on 25 October 1943.
He was killed in action in New Guinea in 1944.
