A talented fast bowler who rose to prominence on the Queensland club scene in the early 1990s, Shane Jurgensen failed to find a place in his home state's side due to the strength of their bowling attack. He moved to Western Australia, where he managed to make his first class debut. After a couple of seasons with Western Australia, he again moved, this time south to Tasmania, where he played some of his best cricket for state, including a hat-trick against New South Wales, and a record 11 wickets in the 2002-03 Pura Cup

Following his success with Tasmania, he returned to Queensland, finally fulfilling his dream of representing his home state. However, he failed to get regular call-ups for the state, and missed all of the 2005-06 season, although still retained his state contract.
