 and later became the Pakistan's goal keeping coach. Eight years later he was on the side that captured the bronze medal in Barcelona, Spain. At the age of 18, in 1982, he saved a penalty stroke to save Pakistan in the Final of World Cup. During his days, he was considered as one of the best goalkeepers in the game of field hockey, and was capped 135 times.

On 13 February 2009, Shahid Ali Khan was appointed the head coach of the national men's hockey team of Pakistan, the first (former) goalkeeper to be appointed to this prestigious post.
The team's first happiness with him was when the hockey team qualified for the 2010 Hockey World Cup. Pakistan also came home with silver medal after competing in the Hockey Challenge held in Salta, Argentina.
He is brother in Law of Muhammad Owais Qureshi.
He currently resides in Karachi with his wife and three children.
