Shah Abdul Hannan was born in 1939 Mymensingh

, Bangladesh. He graduated in Economics and Political Science in 1959 from Jagannath College, Dhaka University, holding second position in the University. He had his Masters from the same university in Political Science, obtaining the first position in the year 1961.

Government officer

Shah Abdul Hannan started his professional life as a Lecturer in Political Science in a College in Dhaka. Then he joined Pakistan Finance Service in 1963. He held the following important positions in the Government of Bangladesh:

As a Chairman of Value Added Tax Cell, he was the key person in the introduction of VAT. Introduction of VAT was a major breakthrough in modernising the tax system in the country and it greatly increased revenue for the benefit of the nation.

As the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, he was the Project Director of Reforms of Banking System project. At that time, Banking Act was amended to include few sections to facilitate Islamic Banking and to modernize it, requiring banks to maintain capital on the basis of assets. Bank computerization was upgraded, research capability was increased, loan classification system was made of international standard and a system of analysis of risk of credit proposals (CRA) was introduced. These were major changes which are having effect on the future of Banking and Finance in the country.

Educator

He was involved in the establishment of the First Private University in Bangladesh (North South University) and rendered service it in different capacities (as a member of the Board of governors and as Convenor, Financial Assistance Committee.He was also involved in three other private universities (in 2, he acted as Acting Vice Chancellors for some time: Asian University of Bangladesh and Darul Ihsan University.) He taught Comparative Politics and Ethics in Asian University.

He was the Chairman of an educational institution - Institute of Resource Development (IRD) that has now merged with Islamic University, Chittagong. He is now the Chief of Dhaka Campus of the university.It offers courses on BBA and MBA programs and computer science.
He is also looking after the Academic affairs of a A-level college called "Manarat International School and College” in Dhaka. He is a Syndicate member of the Manarat University.

As an Economist

He also established, along with others, two think tanks, namely Islamic Economics Research Bureau and Bangladesh Institute of Islamic Thought, who are doing research work in social disciplines.

He has written many books on Economics (Bangla), Social Laws (English), Role of Govt. in Economy (English), Women Issues (Bangla) and on Islamic Jurisprudence (English).
He worked in the Editorial Board of a daily (The Arthanitee). He has many writings on professional subjects - Banking, Finance and Tax matters. He has also reasonable expertise in Banking, Finance, Taxation, Political Science, Islamic Law, Gender and Social issues.
He is the Chief Advisor of Islamic Insurance Co. Bangladesh and members of Shariah Council in some other Islamic Insurance companies at present. He is the Chairman of Islamic Banks’ Consultative Forum(IBCF) and a founder member of the Central Shariah Board of Islamic Banks. Currently he is holding the position of the Chairman of Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd. the biggest Private Bank in Bangladesh.

Shah Abdul Hannan has great contribution in using the Internet in disseminating Islamic knowledge and values. He is an Advisor of Witness-Pioneer an internet based Forum for Dawa work. He writes regularly to many Bangladeshi and Islamic Internet groups.

Social Work

He is involved in many social activities. He was one of the founders of the IBN SINA Trust, the biggest social welfare Trust in the country. It works in the field of health care and it has many types of social welfare activities. He is still actively involved with the Trust.

He is deeply involved in an organization called ACSRB (Association of Correction and Social Reclamation, Bangladesh). This organization has set up a shelter for morally distressed women (such as Prostitutes and offends). He has been working with various other organizations for upliftment of women. He is also involved in an NGO in his rural district. It works with women and gives interest less micro-credit on service-charge basis.
