The film festival starts with previews of coming attractions for films starring Sesame Street characters including "The Counting Kid Counts Again" and "The Pretty Little Space Ponies". As the film is about to begin, the projector breaks, causing all of the film to run all over the theater, ruining the film festival. The inhabitants of Sesame Street agree that the festival has ended, and leave the theater. Elmo

, disappointed by what has happened, decides to have himself and guests use their own imaginations to finish the adventures of the films, and tells guests to put on their glasses while he prepares. At this point, guests enter the main theater where the show begins.

Main Show

The show starts once everyone is seated. As soon as everyone is in the main theater, Big Bird

are in the Sahara Desert. When Bert complains about wanting water, Ernie imagines they are in his bath tub. When Bert still complains it is not the water he had in mind, Ernie imagines they are underwater, where Ernie plays fetch with a "dogfish". Out of nowhere, a purple octopus pulls Bert away-not to harm, but to dance the tango with him. Bert is having so much fun dancing with him until he's snapped out of the dream sequence and finds himself held by Oscar.

Elmo incourages Oscar to make up his "movie" next, but he refuses, so Cookie Monster

Cookie Monster is a Muppet on the children's television show Sesame Street. He is best known for his voracious appetite and his famous eating phrases: "Me want cookie!", "Me eat cookie!", and "Om nom nom nom" . He often eats anything and everything, including danishes, donuts, lettuce, apples,...

uses his imagination instead. Cookie Monster imagines that he is a giant rampaging in a city. But Cookie explains that it's not him who's causing the distress, but rather, a giant cookie which flies around like a UFO, squirting chocolate on the buildings. Cookie makes an attempt to defeat him, but he fails. That is until he "walks off", tricking the over-sized cookie into having his way until he is smashed into crumbs. Cookie then swallows the crumb like a vacuum cleaner, causing him to belch.

Elmo again tells Oscar to make up his movie, so Oscar imagines they are in a junkyard full of vermin and trash. A vermin pops up, and Oscar complains were the rest of them are, at which point the other vermin bruch against the viewer's legs. Oscar's movie continues as a choir of stinky socks sing about "A Line of Trash" and rain falls from the sky.

As Oscar and Elmo return from his movie, it begins to pour, ruining the day. Elmo thinks that he has failed to use imagination to save the Film Festival, but Big Bird encourages him to imagine it's a sunny day out. Elmo does, and the film concludes with all the characters singing "Imagination!" as Elmo comes up with a "happy ending" involving sunny skies, balloons, decorations and so on. The film then concludes, and guests exit the theater.

Post-show

At the Universal Studios Japan version only, guests exit the theater and see Elmo being interviewed by a muppet news reporter about how he saved the Film Festival by using his imagination.

At the Busch Gardens and SeaWorld versions, a commercial for Sesame Place

plays on the theater screen instead while guests exit.

Differences

There are multiple differences between the SeaWorld version of the film versus the original Universal version. This is due to the film having been created for Universal Studios Japan, and so, there are changes in the structure of the Busch Gardens and SeaWorld theaters from the Universal Studios one. This resulted in the experince having to be slightly changed as well, most notably re-dubbing from Japanese

 for the American audiences.

In the SeaWorld films, there is no pre-show, and instead, the preshow to the film is merged into the actual film, resulting in the guests having to wait through the first seven minutes until putting on the glasses before the 3-D effects start. Also at the SeaWorld attractions, the postshow with Elmo being interviewed does not play, but a commercial for SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment's own Sesame Place park instead plays on the theater screen while guests exit, and brochures for Sesame Place are on display at the theater exit.
